Delta Airlines passengers panicked as smoke filled the plane's cabin as they landed in Denver, forcing an emergency evacuation on the runway. No fire was observed and it was still unclear on Wednesday morning what caused the smoke.
Denver International Airport spokesperson Emily Williams confirmed that Flight 1854 had just landed from Detroit on Tuesday evening when smoke filled the cabin, The New York Times reported.
Passengers posted photos of the evaluation to Twitter.
One passenger identified as AJ Davidson recounted the chaos that ensued following the plane's landing.
"Everyone was kind of yelling, like, 'Hey, there's smoke coming out of the vents. What's going on? Open the doors. Why aren't the masks dropping down?,'" he told Denver's 9News.
A flight attendant instructed passengers to crouch low to the ground and cover their mouths while cabin crew deliberated their next move should be.
Davidson said they eventually decided to evacuate the plane.
"She yelled, 'evacuate the plane,' and seconds later, the doors popped open. We all jumped down the slide and got out of there as fast as we could," he said.
Another passenger identified as DJ Semenza told CNN a similar story.
"The oxygen masks never came down and people began to freak out. The crew tried to keep calm and eventually called for an evacuation."
A third person tweeted about the incident, explaining that passengers were complaining about a foul taste lingering in their mouths after inhaling the smoke.
Airport staff said the Delta plane was safely evacuated and that only minor injuries were sustained.
