David Ortiz did more than just trot around the bases after his game-winning home run Wednesday: He set a new record for slowest time around the baseball diamond.

Ortiz trotted around the bases in an easygoing 32.91 seconds after his eighth-inning homer, Fox Sports said, relieving Bobby Abreu of his previous record for slowest home run trot of 31.56 seconds.

Ortiz makes a pretty consistent appearance on the Tater Trot Tracker, which keeps an eye on such things, and Fox said he had seven of the Top 10 slowest trots during last season.
“To be clear, this trot was
not because Ortiz was showing up the Rangers (at least no more so than normal),” said Wezen-Ball.com’s Larry Granillo. “It is very common for a player to watch a sky-high ball going down the line to see where it lands before he heads out on his trot. And this ball was tough to say either way — Texas manager Ron Washington actually challenged the fair/foul call because it was so tough to tell.”
On an MLB.com video of the hit, one announcer said, “He thought it was a foul ball. He stood in the batter’s box.”
Tater trotting record aside, Big Papi’s three-run home run led the Red Sox to a 4-2 win over the Texas Rangers.
