A life-size statue of late English rocker David Bowie titled “Earthly Messenger” was unveiled in Aylesbury, the town where he first introduced his fans to his Ziggy Stardust persona, on Sunday.
The statue shows Bowie looking with an amused expression at a collage of all the different personae he adopted during his career, Variety reported. The statue was made after a Kickstarter campaign was spearheaded by music promoter and fan David Stopps, who worked at Friars where Bowie performed as Stardust and launched two of his albums.
Speakers atop the statue play a new Bowie song every hour.
“The reaction to the statue has been so positive,” Stopps said, the BBC reported. He also started a petition to rename Aylesbury “Aylesbowie” in honor of the singer, who died of cancer two years ago at age 69.
Sculptor Andrew Sinclair designed the piece using the mask taken from Bowie’s face during the filming of “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Twitter users commented on the statue’s unveiling and on its subject.
