David Berkowitz, the notorious "Son of Sam" serial killer, has been hospitalized at the Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he will undergo an emergency heart surgery, The Times Union noted.
News that the 64-year-old was rushed to an Albany hospital on Monday was first reported by the New York Post.
Berkowitz has been in prison since 1978, after he went on a killing spree with a .44 caliber revolver that ultimately left six dead and seven others wounded between 1976 and 1977, The Times Union said.
According to a statement from the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, "Berkowitz has been transferred to an outside hospital and remains in the custody of the Shawangunk Correctional Facility."
Times Union said Albany Med as it is the only hospital in Albany with a secured facility for treating inmates.
During his killing rampage, Berkowitz targeted young women and couples sitting in cars, The Daily Mail reported.
He left letters behind at two murder scenes in which he referred to himself as the "Son of Sam," a reference to a neighbor he claimed was a demon. In his letters, Berkowitz said Sam's dog had been giving him orders to kill.
Upon his arrest, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for each of the six murders and, during his time behind bars, Berkowitz became a reborn Christian.
In an interview with CBS News, he claimed to have been "very lost and confused" at the time of the killings.
"There was a battle going on inside me," he said.
Berkowitz said he thought he was doing something to "appease the devil" by murdering his victims.
"I'm sorry for it,' he told CBS News.
