By    |   Monday, 15 September 2014 07:56 AM EDT

Dave Benton, an anchor at WCIA-TV in Illinois, shared a heartbreaking news report with viewers last week, but this one was about himself.

Benton said that doctors recently told him that his brain tumor is too large for surgery or radiation, and that he only has four to six months to live.

He says he'll try a new treatment to slow the tumor's growth, but that his goal is to add "a few more days and make them the best they can be."

Benton has a wife and two adult children. He grew up in Addison, a Chicago suburb, and graduated from Northern Illinois University.

Benton's online biography says he has worked at the Champaign station for nine years.
