Danny Masterson has been fired from the Netflix series “The Ranch” following sexual assault allegations against the actor, Fox News reported, and Netflix confirmed his departure to USA Today. Masterson has denied the claims.
“As a result of ongoing discussions, Netflix and the producers have written Danny Masterson out of ‘The Ranch’," a Netflix statement read. "Yesterday was his last day on the show, and production will resume in early 2018 without him.”
The 40-year-old actor is best known for his role as Steven Hyde on "That '70s Show," which aired from 1998 until 2006, The Associated Press reported.
Masterson, a devout Scientologist, has been under investigation since January, after three women accused him of sexually assaulting them in the early 2000s, CBS reported.
He dismissed the allegations, saying they were a ploy to boost the ratings of the TV show, "Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath."
The AP reported in March that a Los Angeles police investigation had been launched after the three women came forward and reported they were sexually assaulted by Masterson, but declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing investigation.
On Monday, Netflix came under fire after releasing a statement to The Huffington Post confirming that its director of global kids content, Andy Yeaman, had made “careless” and “uninformed” comments to one of Masterson’s accusers after it emerged that he did not believe the allegations.
Following that, an online petition was launched calling for “The Ranch” to be cancelled.
As of Tuesday over 39,000 supporters had signed the petition and it was gaining momentum.
Soon after, Netflix announced that Masterson would be written out of “The Ranch,” although he would still be featured in the remainder of Season 2 and parts of Season 3, Fox News reported.
In a statement, Masterson said he was disappointed in Netflix’s decision to write him out of the show.
“From day one, I have denied the outrageous allegations against me," he said via The Hollywood Reporter.
"Law enforcement investigated these claims more than 15 years ago and determined them to be without merit. I have never been charged with a crime, let alone convicted of one."
