Daniel Handler, the writer better known by his pen name Lemony Snicket, announced on Twitter Monday that he and his wife are making a $1 million donation to Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood is currently at the foreground of a battle on Capitol Hill as Republicans push to defund it after a series of videos popped up online showing organization officials seemingly discussing the sale of
aborted fetal tissue, The Washington Post reported.
Though the video clips, the focal point of a fiery congressional hearing Tuesday, implied the organization sold the tissue for profit, Planned Parenthood has denied the charge.
Handler, the author of the "Series of Unfortunate Events" books, announced his donation on social media.
His wife, illustrator Lisa Brown,
later explained their decision to BuzzFeed News.
"My husband and I have supported Planned Parenthood for years, for obvious reasons: It's a great organization that has provided top-quality healthcare for countless women and families in our lives," she said. "This year, Planned Parenthood has gone through a series of unfortunate events, and it felt right to make our support more public and more dramatic."
Planned Parenthood responded in kind on social media.
Others on social media were not as supportive of the couple's donation.
