Crumbs Bakery Reopens First of 26 Locations in NYC, NJ, Chicago

The Crumbs bakery chain reopened the first of 26 stores on Tuesday in Manhattan, a major turnaround for the company after its July bankruptcy, which led to the shuttering of all 48 locations.

AM New York reported that the chain – one that previously dominated the island – "is highly reminiscent of its former self, selling mini, classic, signature and colossal cupcakes along with breakfast pastries and a new food mashup the 'baissant' – a bagel and croissant hybrid."

The new owners of Crumbs, CNBC's "The Profit" star Marcus Lemonis and his partner Scott Fischer, are high-profile turnaround gurus, and also own the futuristic ice cream company Dippin' Dots, which are now available at Crumbs.

"We were in a mad dash to get open," Lemonis said at the grand opening of their Broadway store between 37th and 38th streets. "We’ve gotten the product right, but we still need to work on the process."

Lemonis and his partner plan to open 25 stores before the holidays in New York, New Jersey, and Chicago.

"I am convinced that the model they had was totally broken and the model we have is a lot closer to where it needs to be," he told the New York Daily News.

"What you’re ultimately trying to do is get a frequency of visits from a customer and that the more narrow your product is the less frequent you’re going to see that customer."

Many are excited to see the bake shop back in action after its summer-long hiatus.

"I came in early for this," one woman attending the grand opening told 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck. "I’m so happy, just happy that it’s open."
