A norovirus outbreak on the Crown Princess cruise ship has infected more than 170 of the 4,000 passengers on board during the month-long trip from San Pedro to Hawaii.

"There were a number of people who had contracted norovirus," passenger Laura Tagliere told CBS Los Angeles. "We used our elbows to push the buttons in the elevator, and took the stairs more often, tried to avoid touching handrails, and those kinds of things."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now investigating the ship ahead of its next trip, and will be guiding the sanitation process.

"In response, we have enacted our stringent disinfecting protocols developed in conjunction with the CDC," officials explained in a written statement. "This includes extensive deep cleaning of the ship, and the terminal in Los Angeles on Sunday before the ship embarks on its next voyage."

Norovirus is a gastrointestinal virus, and causes vomiting and diarrhea. Most people recover in roughly three days.

The outbreak of the disease on the ship is the second this year, and the fourth since 2012.

More than 150 people fell ill with the norovirus in April, at which time the ship also underwent a sanitation process.

One passenger was airlifted off the ship during a medical emergency that officials said was unrelated to a norovirus infection.
