Crayola has announced it is retiring the dandelion crayon, a shade of yellow, in favor of another shade of blue.
Dandelion became a Crayola crayon color in 1990 when eight colors — maize, lemon yellow, blue gray, raw umber, green blue, orange red, orange yellow, and violet blue — were retired and eight new ones took their places, The New York Times reported. Crayola also retired four other crayons in 2003.
Crayola counted down to the announcement of the retired color with social media teases to heighten the drama. The official announcement was slated for Friday, but Crayola released a video featuring an animated dandelion crayon saying goodbye to fans on Thursday instead.
Apparently, the early announcement came after Target began selling crayon boxes that already showed dandelion’s retirement and a shopper posted pictures on social media Thursday, according to CNN Money.
March 31 is National Crayon Day, which was the planned date for the big announcement. A contest will determine the name of the new shade of blue, crayon packages also said, CNN reported.
Other Twitter users seemed determined to hold on to their dandelion crayons even after their retirement.
