Craig Morgan's son Jerry Greer was found dead in Kentucky Lake late Monday, still wearing a life jacket he had on from tubing the day before, reported
The Tennessean.
Morgan, a country singer best known for hit records "Tough," "Almost Home," and "That's What I Love About Sunday," was in seclusion with the rest of his family.
Greer, 19, was tubing with others on the Tennessee River near Kentucky Lake on Sunday when he fell into the water and never resurfaced, witnesses told Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis.
After Greer was reported missing, about 20 to 30 boats joined in the search effort, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency authorities told The Tennessean.
Davis said he didn't know what could have caused Greer not to surface, even though he was wearing a life jacket.
"It was just as simple as hitting a wave and turning over and not coming back up," Davis said, according to
People magazine.
Greer, who from graduated high school in May, planned on attending Marshall University and walking on to the football team, according to The Tennessean. He had played football and soccer in high school.
Greer was close to his father, who currently hosts the Outdoor Channel series "Craig Morgan All Access Outdoors," noted the newspaper.
"It is with deep sadness that I am confirming the passing of Jerry Greer, son of country music entertainer Craig Morgan and wife Karen Greer," Morgan's representative told People. "The family is grateful for the outpouring of support and requests prayers at this time as they privately mourn this terrible loss."
Other country music stars shared their condolences on Twitter.
