A Baltimore County couple, both 100 years old, celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this week.
Walter and Lisette Kimmel married Aug. 18, 1940, just a few years after they met at church,
WBAL-TV reported. She was an organ player, while he sang in the choir and eventually became choir director.
"Our activities really centered around the church," Walter
told The Baltimore Sun.
On Tuesday, the Kimmels gathered friends and family for an afternoon of big-band style live music at their home, the Charlestown Retirement Community. They enjoyed a custom anniversary cake made by SugarBakers of Catonsville, and the décor included color-coordinated table dressings and balloons.
In their working days, Walter worked for Baltimore Gas & Electric, while Lisette was a secretary. They told reporters at the celebration that when they moved to Baltimore as a young couple, work was tough to find, as they were still feeling the effects of the Great Depression.
When the war came, Walter enlisted in the Navy, in 1943 — just months after the birth of their first son. He was be deployed for two years, and Lisette enlisted her mother for help with the baby.
The Kimmels now have two sons, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
"Stay true to each other. Be honest with each other and enjoy each other," Lisette said when asked for advice on a long and happy marriage.
