Costco Bibles Labeled as Fiction, Company Apologizes for Error

By    |   Wednesday, 20 November 2013 04:34 PM EST

After a pastor tweeted a picture of a Bible for sale at Costco labeled as fiction, the California store has issued an apology.

"Costco's distributor mislabeled a small percentage of the Bibles, however we take responsibility and should have caught the mistake. We are correcting this with them for future distribution. In addition, we are immediately relabeling all mislabeled Bibles. We greatly apologize for this error," the bulk retailer said in a statement.

Pastor Caleb Kaltenbach spotted the sticker that read “$14.99 Fiction” while shopping in Simi Valley, Calif., on Friday. He snapped a photo and tweeted it to his followers:

As word spread, Kaltenbach was invited onto local and national TV broadcasts. He did not encourage talk of persecution, but said, "We do need to stand up for our faith and we need to be vocal about our concerns.”

“People are pretty shocked and upset,” he told Fox News. “We are supposed to be living in an era of tolerance, but what Costco did doesn’t seem too tolerant.”

“If they don’t believe in the Bible, that’s fine — but at least label it as ‘religion’ as some bookstores do, or ‘inspiration.’”
