Country's 224th Birthday Celebrated During Constitution Day

Friday, 16 September 2011 09:46 AM EDT

Constitution Day, a holiday commemorating the drafting of the U.S. Constitution, will be observed this year on Friday, Sept. 16, in honor of our country’s 224th birthday, reports The Jackson Sun

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the law into effect in 1956, originally designating September 17 through the 23rd as Constitution Week and the 17th as Citizenship Day.

Calvin Coolidge, John D. Rockefeller, and General John Pershing were all part of the Sons of the American Revolution committee founded to promote Constitution Day in 1917.

Congress went on to rename the holiday Constitution Day in 2004 after Robert Byrd passed an amendment to the Omnibus spending bill of 2004. The act also declared that all publicly funded institutions teach the history of the Constitution during that week.

The following year, the mandate was extended to all public schools receiving federal funding.

If the holiday falls on a weekend, schools and other government institutions celebrate it on the Friday before or the Monday after.
