New York Comic Con will go ahead with hosting an in-person convention despite receiving backlash for the decision.
The announcement was made Thursday by ReedPop, the company behind the annual convention, which said the event will take place between Oct. 7-10 at the Javits Center in New York City.
"Right now, we see a path forward for safe, amazing events that are going to look a bit different than usual, so that’s where we’re heading,” said Kristina Rogers, the U.S. comic portfolio director for ReedPop, in a statement. "Keep in mind what we communicate is subject to change as state and local guidelines are adjusted."
Precautionary measures will be taken, Rogers explained. The event will have limited capacity and attendees will be required to wear masks and have their temperatures screened upon entry.
Despite the regulations, social media is still criticizing the event for going ahead with its plans despite the coronavirus pandemic.
"I'm skipping this year for the first time. It's a huge risk, if you guys are going ahead with this, you need to restrict it to NY residents and force everyone to show proof of vaccination," one Twitter user wrote in response to New York Comic Con's announcement on Twitter.
"I highly suggest skipping this year. It has train wreak to make a quick buck written all over it," another replied.
"the sheer volume of ppl who get sick after cons normally .. i dont think this is a great move," a third added.
"This is seriously a horrible idea. As a person who hasn’t missed NYCC in as long as I can remember, I know I won’t be attending this year. It’s sad that you’re valuing money over peoples lives and well-being. I love conventions but this is a bad idea," another Twitter user chimed in.
Although the backlash continues, ReedPop said it will also be hosting its three other Comic Con events this year.
Florida Supercon, will be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center from Sept. 10-12, Emerald City Comic Con will be held at the Washington State Convention Center from Dec. 2-5 and C2E2 will be held at McCormick Place from Dec. 10-12.
