A whole small town Colorado police department quit this month – the chief and his three officers – when a new mayor took over, leaving local law enforcement up the sheriff.

Green Mountain Falls, a community of about 700 people in El Paso County which also encompasses Colorado Springs, found itself without law enforcement when Marshal Tim Bradley and three volunteer reserve officers resigned on April 14, reported KXRM-TV.

That was the day before newly elected mayor Jane Newberry and two new town trustees were sworn into office, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

A source told KXRM-TV that the officers left "over policy and unhappiness with the new mayor."

Newberry said in the meantime the sheriff's office will handle calls from Green Mountain Falls and that residents shouldn't be worried.

"They should absolutely feel safe," Newberry KXRM-TV. "I have every confidence in El Paso County Sheriff's Office. I always have and there’s no reason anybody needs to worry. We are a small community and it’s one of our advantages is we all look out for each other."

El Paso County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jackie Kirby told the Gazette that the office already does dispatching for the Green Mountain Falls' police and fire departments.

"We will answer calls for service there just like we would with any other district in the county," Kirby said.

In 2013, the Green Mountain Falls board of trustees discussed replacing its town marshal with a private security company, but the mayor at that time, Lorrie Worthey, wasn't included in the discussions. noted the Gazette.

Worthey lost to Newberry in the April election.
