Cold foam is being offered by Starbucks as a topping on iced drinks this week and it's proving to be a big hit if you believe the buzz on social media.
The cold foam is aerated skim milk that mimics the froth on hot espresso drinks, according to CNBC. The business network stated that Starbucks rolled out the cold foam drinks as the company tries to rebound from sluggish sales over several quarters in the U.S.
Not even the once-popular Frappucinos could get the company out of its slump, leaving experts to debate if Starbucks can continue to fend off competition from other craft coffee shops and dwindling customer loyalty, CNBC noted.
Last year, Starbucks briefly rolled out a limited-time Unicorn Frappucino, which brought in a rush of customers, but that success was short-lived as well.
The cold foam will top three of Starbucks' cafe drinks — Cascara Cold Brew, Blonde Iced Cappuccino, and Cascara Nitro Cold Brew — but it can be added to any beverage for an additional 50 cents.
The cold foam has been available at the Starbucks-backed Reserved Roastery restaurant in Seattle since 2014, but now it is being made available in participating stores nationwide, according to the website Refinery29.com.
Cold drinks have been driving Starbucks sales of late, going from 37 percent of sales five years ago to 50 percent in 2017, CNBC noted.
Starbucks recently announced that it will close 8,000 of its company-owned stores on May 29 to educate 175,000 workers on racial bias after two African-American men were arrested while waiting for a friend at a Philadelphia Starbucks last week in an incident captured on video, according to CNN.
