The final show of "The Colbert Report" will be Thursday, Dec. 18, as host Stephen Colbert wraps up his long sting on Comedy Central and moves to take over "The Late Show."

Although the ending of the show was announced some time ago, the final date wasn’t set until Colbert’s Thursday announcement.

Colbert will take over "The Late Show" as David Letterman retires, although a specific date in 2015 for that event has not been announced.

With the ending of “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central, fans will also see the end of the conservative character Colbert has played since the show debuted in 2005.

In announcing on Thursday night's episode that his book "America Again" was released in paperback, Colbert said, “This book is perfect for long-time fans or first-time viewers who are wondering who is this Colbert guy. … And there’s an even more important reason for you to buy my book because on Dec. 18, my show is ending. Folks, after nine years, I am taking a well-earned vacation.”

Colbert then consulted his travel agent, Grimmy, who looked a lot like the Grim Reaper, and pointed to Colbert’s destination as being in the fire. Colbert’s guess — Greece.

“The point is, Steven Colbert, the guy you’ve seen here every night for nine years will be gone, and all you’ll have left of me will be this book,” he said. In encouraging fans – or enemies – to buy his book, Colbert pushed viewers to go to independent bookstores, continuing what he called his “longtime war” against Amazon.

Colbert will be leaving behind his conservative "Colbert Report" character to be himself when he takes over "The Late Show."

In April, Colbert talked to the Wall Street Journal about filling Letterman’s role.

“Dave has been on the air my entire adult life. Late Night debuted my first night in college,” Colbert told WSJ. “I learned more from watching Dave than going to my classes, especially the ones I did not go to because I stayed up till 1:30 watching Dave. I do not envy whoever they try to put in that chair. Folks, those are some huge shoes to fill — and some really big pants.”
