CNBC Outs Tim Cook as Gay? Awkward Silence Follows Faux Paus (Video)

A CNBC host may have outed Apple CEO Tim Cook during a segment of the show talking about gay company leaders, and the awkward silence that followed is uncomfortable to watch.

During a Squawk on the Street segment about former BP CEO John Browne, who wrote “The Glass Closet: Why Coming Out Is Good for Business,” columnist Jim Stewart said gay CEOs hadn’t been very responsive to him when he reached out to talk with them about the issue.

At that point, co-host Simon Hobbs said, “I think Tim Cook is fairly open about the fact that he is gay at the head of Apple, isn’t he?”

Cue a silence that indicated Hobbs may have just outed Cook, and Stewart started shaking his head and issuing a long drawn out, “Nnnnoo.”

Then Hobbs added, “Oh dear, was that an error?”

Stewart, not wanting to get into it, said, “I don’t want to comment on anybody who might or might not be [gay]. I’m not going to out anybody.”

But despite the decidedly awkward pause in the interview, Valleywag reported in 2013 that “everybody knows Cook is gay” and that the CEO had been starting to talk more about his experiences.

Out magazine named Cook to its 2013 Power List as one of the most powerful LBGT people in the world.
