Clint Eastwood is suing several companies selling CBD products for allegedly using his name and likeness to sell their products through online scams and false news articles. The 90-year-old actor and director filed two lawsuits on Wednesday in federal court in Los Angeles seeking millions in damages from nearly 20 companies across the country, according to the Associated Press.
The suits state that Eastwood had no association with the manufacturing, promotion, or sale of CBD, a substance derived from marijuana that can be made into CBD oils and supplements without producing a high.
The first lawsuit refers to fake news articles claiming Eastwood was promoting and selling CBD products. One cited article features a phony interview in which Eastwood falsely claims he is stepping away from the spotlight to focus on his new CBD line. The article included links to purchase Eastwood's supposed products.
One of the suits further states that companies had been using programming code and other tactics to illegally link Eastwood's name to their products in online searches.
Only one company named in the lawsuits, Sera Labs, responded to the allegations in a statement explaining that it "worked for a limited time with a publisher and gave them specific advertisements they could use which follow our very strict guidelines and shut down the ads immediately after learning that they used Eastwood’s name and likeness."
The company said it has since severed all ties with the advertisers.
