Movie theater chain Cinemark has moved to ban moviegoers from bringing large bags into its theaters in order to improve safety.
Cinemark posted on its website that beginning Thursday, “bags or packages larger than 12”x12”x6” will not be permitted into theaters.” Medical equipment and diaper bags are exempt from the ban.
Cinemark characterized the policy change as an “effort to enhance the safety and security of our guests and employees.” The statement said Cinemark staff will be able to inspect any bags and packages brought into the theater.
The NFL enacted a similar ban in 2013.
Several recent mass shootings, including the Valentine’s Day shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, have prompted schools and other public buildings where numbers of people gather to consider additional measures to keep people safe.
While Cinemark's large bag ban seems to address safety concerns that could lead to a shooting or other violence in the movie theater, some on social media saw it as a way to crack down on moviegoers sneaking food into the theater rather than a safety-conscious move.
