The legendary Chuck Berry was honored with online tributes from fans including former President Barack Obama and rock 'n' roll luminaries like Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, and Paul McCartney.

Berry died at 90 on Saturday as one of the rock 'n' roll genre's trailblazers. His guitar work and songs like "Johnny B. Goode" and "Roll Over Beethoven," combined with stage persona, separated him early and one of the genre's original innovators, The New York Times noted.

After picking up the technique of blending two guitar strings at once from guitarist T-Bone Walker, Berry quickly crafted his own distinctive sound with it, which led him to becoming a star, the Times noted.

"After Elvis Presley, only Chuck Berry had more influence on the formation and development of Rock and Roll," his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame biography said. He was inducted with the hall's inaugural class in 1986. "The St. Louis native internalized country, blues and R&B influences to create a singular guitar technique.

"Berry paired these skills with dashing charisma, magnetic stage moves and an expressive voice that resonated with both teenagers and anyone young at heart — ensuring his status as one of Rock and Roll's first great hitmakers," the biography continued.

Tributes for Berry on social media came from Obama and music's biggest stars this weekend.
