Christine Brennan, a USA Today journalist and former Washington Post NFL writer, is the latest to call for the Washington Redskins to change its name, calling it "racist."
Brennan, who served as the Washington Redskins beat writer for the Post from 1985-87,
said in a column Thursday that it was time for them to retire the name, adding that using "Redskins" in her writing "thousands of times" did not make it right.

"I think it was the cumulative effect of all the reporting on the issue in the past year or so, solid journalism that continually brings to the surface just how racist the term is too many in the Native American community," Brennan wrote. "And even if only some Native Americans think it's racist, here's news for the rest of us, whether we want to hear it and deal with it or not: it's racist."
Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder has repeatedly said that changing the team's name is not up for discussion, yet people keep talking about it.
Brennan's column comes on the heels of NFL commissioner
Roger Goodell telling a D.C. radio station on Tuesday that the NFL "has to listen" to those who find the term offensive, according to CBS Sports.
"If one person's offended, we have to listen," Goodell told WJFK-FM, The Fan.. "And ultimately, it is Dan [Snyder]'s decision. But it is something that I want all of us to go out and make sure we're listening to our fans."
But in June, Goodell sent a different message, defending the team's name, saying "Redskins" represents tradition, and it is "a unifying force that stands for strength, courage, pride and respect."
