Christie Brinkley posed for the new SI Swimsuit issue at age 63 alongside her daughters, 31-year-old Alexa Ray Joel and 18-year-old Sailor Brinkley Cook.
Brinkley posted a picture on Instagram, thanking Sports Illustrated for "sending the powerful message that good things come in packages of every size and we do not come with an expiration date!"
Brinkley’s daughters also took to Instagram to talk about posing for the issue and what it means to them personally.
“My body and I have been through it all,” Cook said, according to USA Today. “But recently I have been liberated. I am healthy, I treat myself well, and for that I’m happy. I’ve looked in the mirror and been able to LOVE the things about my body that beauty norms deem ‘undesirable’. I now have grown to know that my body is worthy of so many great things.”
Joel echoed similar sentiments, saying she doesn’t “have a completely flat tummy, or cellulite-free thighs…nor am I a model’s height or shape. Neither are hundreds of millions of other beautiful women out there. SO WHAT? Does it really matter, in the end? All that matters is how YOU feel about yourself.”
According to Sports Illustrated, Brinkley’s posed in the magazine on eight other occasions, dating back to 1975, with this being the first time since 2004.
She even posed for SI Swimsuit covers on three consecutive occasions – a record – from 1979 to 1981. At the time, no other swimsuit model had even graced the SI cover twice in a row.
While on set, Brinkley got emotional when talking about what this latest shoot meant for her, reminiscing on what it was like to pose for the magazine many years ago.
“This is a real full circle moment for me,” Christie said as tears welled up in her eyes, according to Sports Illustrated. “I can get very emotional about this. How many years ago, I was that insecure girl hoping that I would be good enough for the magazine. So to see my daughters now having the same thoughts I had, and to be able to see them actually be there on the job, was definitely a big moment.”
