Chris Christie's Softball Prowess Gets Charitable Ribbing

By    |   Tuesday, 24 Jun 2014 10:37 AM

Chris Christie's participation in a charity softball game on Monday night received some ribbing in the media, but the New Jersey governor defended his performance Tuesday morning.

On WFAN's "Boomer & Carton" show, Christie was told with great hyperbole that third base "was a little hot for you to handle" by host Craig Carton, who also played at the charity event. According to CBS New York, Christie quipped back, saying "Give me a break! You’ve gotta be kidding me . . . I made the plays except for one."

Christie and Carton jokingly argued on about the fourth annual Bombers Boomer Broadway Softball Classic, which was held at Yankee Stadium and raised money for the Boomer Esiason Foundation and cystic fibrosis research.

Pictures of Christie in his softball outfit provoked some of the usual jokes online, which can be summed up with a Tweet from a fellow conservative:

Nonetheless, The Associated Press reported that Christie's team — which included both Boomer and Carton — pulled out a 7-6 win.

Christie said he was glad for the media coverage, which gave exposure to the charity event.

"I never thought we would get that kind of attention," he said.

He was also taken aback by some reporters asking him about tough policy issues as he was about to take the field.

"I was just there to play the game, so my answers were uncharacteristically short yesterday," he told the radio hosts. "You know, I was like, 'We’re here to have fun, we’re here for a good cause, have a nice day.'"

Christie made a crucial play during the 7th inning, which was praised by Carton after the game.

"We had the game on the line. Ground ball to third, man on first and second. [Christie] bobbled it a little bit but made the play and got the out," said Carton, a longtime friend of Christie's. He concluded that the governor "held his own."

"If my performance merits it, I’d be happy to be back next year," said Christie.
