A fire engine saved the day, er, birthday by filling a kiddie pool with water after a mom struggled to do it with pots and pans carried from her kitchen sink in Charlotte, North Carolina.

On a scorching Sunday the unidentified mother wanted nothing more than to make her son’s birthday a memorable occasion and decided that a mini “pool party” would be ideal for him and his friends.

The family didn’t have a garden hose so the mom was trekking one pot at a time between the kitchen and the pool outside when the impatiently waiting partiers were spotted by a passing firetruck, The Charlotte Observer reported.

Charlotte Fire Department’s Engine 18 had been attending to a nearby medical emergency.

The crew hopped out, grabbed a fire hose and set about filling the pool.

Photos posted to the department's Facebook page show a beaming mom and several children splashing around in the pool while the firefighter’s fill it up.

“What was just a simple task for us turned into laughter, smiles, and a life long memory for the neighborhood kids as well as the men on Engine 18,” someone at the station said in the post.

“Firehouse 18 is a neighborhood firehouse full of men and woman who truly care about the families they swore to protect."

Charlotte Fire Department Capt. Michael Gerin said seemingly small tasks such as filling a kiddie pool was a regular occurrence for the station.

“Quite honestly, I mean, as weird as it sounds, it’s nothing that a lot of these guys don’t do every day," he said, according to The Washington Post.

While firefighters are often on the frontlines, putting their lives at risk for others, they are also known to pay it forward with smaller but equally kind gestures.

Earlier this year two firefighters mowed a veteran's lawn in Alabama after responding to a call that the elderly man was having chest pains while doing yard work.

The 30-year veteran was transported to the hospital for treatment and the crew went back to his home and finished mowing the lawn.

In a separate incident, rookie firefighter Stephen Cresci was having dinner with his pregnant wife on his night off when a nearby diner started choking. Cresci jumped up to save the man by executing the perfect Heimlich maneuver.
