Ceiling Collapse Houston: Dozens Injured at Gathering Above Garage

Three dozen people were taken to the hospital with injuries Thursday after the ceiling of a garage apartment collapsed in Houston during a religious service.

The apartment was on the second floor of a garage in Katy, Texas, west of Houston. About 125 people were gathered for the event, The Associated Press said, but it wasn’t clear how many were in the apartment at the time.

News 92 reported that as many as 100 people may have received minor injuries in the incident.

Local fire department spokesman Tim Thomas told the AP that 36 people were taken to area hospitals, three with what he called “urgent” injuries, while most had minor injuries.

News 92 said the most serious problems were head injuries, although none were life-threatening. The station reported that no one was on the first level of the garage when the floor collapsed, and that all were hurt dropping from the second floor down into the rubble.

About a dozen ambulances were called to the scene early Thursday afternoon, and some people had to be pulled from the garage because they were trapped when the floor collapsed, the AP said.

A neighbor, Leticia Sahagun-Rubio, told the AP that “streams of people were just coming out” of the home and then that became a stream of ambulances.

Sahagun-Rubio said an Indian family lives at the home and had sent a letter to neighbors to let them know they would be hosting a religious ceremony for a temple blessing.
