Oprah Winfrey will be given the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2018 Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Wednesday night.
The award is given to “a talented individual for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” says GoldenGlobes.com.
Past recipients have included Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Martin Scorsese, Sidney Poitier, Barbara Streisand, and Denzel Washington.
After the announcement was made, Winfrey tweeted that she was honored to receive the award.
"As a global media leader, philanthropist, producer and actress, she has created an unparalleled connection with people around the world, making her one of the most respected and admired figures today," President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Meher Tatna said of Winfrey. "For generations, Oprah has celebrated strong female characters on and off screen, and has been a role model for women and young girls for decades."
Winfrey is chairman and CEO of OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network, and is executive producer of several series on the network, including “Greenleaf,” “Queen Sugar,” and “Oprah’s Master Class.” She founded O, The Oprah Magazine, and has her own film company, Harpo Films.
Winfrey has appeared in many movies, including the upcoming adaptation of “A Wrinkle in Time,” and had a long-running talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” until 2011. She founded the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa in 2007.
Winfrey was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in the movie “The Color Purple” in 1986.
The 2018 ceremony will take place Jan. 7.
