CBS announced a new web subscription service that will allow people to use the Internet to stream the network's live programming and past shows on demand.

Beginning Thursday and for $5.99 a month, CBS All Access becomes available on CBS.com and mobile devices, allowing people to access to CBS programming and to stream local CBS television stations live in 14 of the largest U.S. markets, the network announced.

"CBS All Access is another key step in the company's long-standing strategy of monetizing our local and national content in the ways that viewers want it," said Leslie Moonves, president of CBS.

"This new subscription service will deliver the most of CBS to our biggest fans while being additive to the overall ecosystem. Across the board, we continue to capitalize on technological advances that help consumers engage with our world-class programming, and we look forward to serving our viewers in this new and exciting way," said Moonves.

The New York Times noted that CBS's announcement comes on the heels of HBO announcement Wednesday that it would begin its own subscription-based web streaming service in 2015.

Richard Plepler, chief executive of HBO, said there is an audience of about 10 million homes in the country which does not have regular cable or satellite service but can be reached by the Internet. He said half them subscribed to a streaming service, reported the Times.

"That is a large and growing opportunity that should no longer be left untapped," said Plepler. "It is time to remove all barriers to those who want HBO. All in, there are 80 million homes that do not have HBO and we will use all means at our disposal to go after them."

Netflix announced on Wednesday that its subscriber base grew slower than anticipated, sparking a 25 percent plunge in share prices after the markets closed.

CBS noted that NFL games are not currently part of the streaming package but that the network is in negotiations with the league to make the games part of CBS All Access.
