Cassandra C in Remission After Forced Chemo in Connecticut

Cassandra C., a 17-year-old Connecticut girl forced by the state to undergo chemotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma, is now in remission.

"It's true, I am in remission; and it would mean the world to me, to be able to come home to get the remainder of this nightmare over with," she posted on her Facebook page this week, NBC Connecticut reported.

Cassandra was diagnosed with cancer in September, and she and decided to forego chemotherapy with the backing of her mother for fear of "toxins." Doctors testified to the Connecticut Supreme Court that Cassandra had an 80 percent chance of survival if she underwent chemotherapy, and the court ruled in January that she was too immature to make her own medical decisions.

She was subsequently ordered into temporary state custody, with the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) overseeing her.

Cassandra said in correspondence with NBC News that she now plans to complete her chemo, but still feels grief over being forced into it.

"I'm committed to finishing the rest of my chemo, which is 2 more cycles, March and April. I would love more than anything to be able to come home to finish it all. I miss my life so dearly, especially my mom, my cat and my boyfriend," she wrote.

"I will never be okay with how this all happened — being taken away from home, hospitalized and especially being strapped to the bed for the surgery for the port placement. Although I haven't had any major side effects besides hair loss, I still wish I was given the right to explore and go with alternatives."

Cassandra's lawyer, assistant public defender Joshua Michtom, will argue on Monday for her release from state custody.

"She should be allowed to go home," he said.

"If, somehow, she shouldn't complete treatment, there's not a great risk that she would die. So, we're going to argue that at this point there is no imminent risk of harm."
