Rodriguez, who won a Golden Globe for “Jane the Virgin,” appeared in the film “Deepwater Horizon” and will appear in the upcoming “Annihilation” movie later this year, according to Variety.
The new series will be based on the educational computer game in which Sandiego traveled around the world stealing national treasures. The game taught lessons about geography to elementary-age children. In the Netflix series, Sandiego’s backstory will be explored, and viewers will learn how she got into her life of crime, Variety reported.
The first season will have 22, 22-minute episodes. Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) will appear as The Player, according to The Verge. The franchise has spawned other TV series, including ‘90s game shows “Where in the World” and “Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?” and an animated cartoon series by DIC Entertainment, “Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?” The Verge reported.
The series will be produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for Netflix, with Duane Capizzi (“The Batman”) and CJ Kettler ("The Tick") as co-executive producers and Kevin Dart ("Mr. Peabody and Sherman") as visual designer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Rodriguez took to Twitter to announce the new venture and confirm her role.
The Netflix series will be released in 2019.
