Captain America: Falcon to Assume Role in Comic Books, Marvel Says

Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, will replace Steve Rogers in The All-New Captain America comic books, meaning Captain America will be black, Marvel Comics announced Wednesday.

The announcement comes on the heels of news this week that a mystery woman will become the next Thor, taking on the role of the “mightiest Avenger” for the first time in the 50-year history of the company.

Referring to “a new chapter” for the All-New Captain America by Rick Remender and Stuart Immonen, Marvel said Wilson’s suit will have the wings of Falcon along with the stars and stripes of Captain America.

“I think that it’s important with these stories to do things that are natural and make sense and have an inherent logic to the universe, but are also constantly shifting and exciting, keeping the drama high. In order to do that it really comes down to creating new dynamics,” Remender said in a news release. “I’ve been having a lot of fun writing Sam. It’s a completely different attitude. The fact that he’s not a soldier shifts things up a bit. Sam’s not going to be Steve. Steve can be very rigid. That can be kind of joyless at times, whereas Sam is absolutely not that.”

Wilson is not the first African-American Captain America. That honor went to Isaiah Bradley, who was featured in a limited series, “Truth: Red, White and Black” in 2003.

The new Marvel diversity was getting a lot of attention in social media Thursday.

And some weren’t really happy at the idea of the changing superhero roles.
