Cake International 2014: Amazing Images of Some Sweet Creations

By    |   Monday, 14 April 2014 11:51 AM EDT

Cake International 2014, the sugarcraft, cake decorating, and baking show, draws cake enthusiasts, renowned industry experts, and professional cake decorators and sugarcrafters from all over the world who share a passion for all things related to cake.

Cake International is held three times during the year in England: in Manchester, London, and Birmingham. This year, from April 10-12, it was at ExCeL (Exhibition Centre London), in Newham, London, where for three mouthwatering days attendees encountered innovative ideas, live competitions, sumptuous supplies from international companies, interactive workshops, and demonstrations. The next show is in Birmingham from Nov. 7-9.

Here are a dozen images of the “cake heaven” that is Cake International.

1. Vincent Van Gogh Cake

If Vincent Van Gogh were around today, he’d likely respect that fact that painting a cake resembles painting on canvas, except that instead of leisurely working with oils, one must work quickly with food-grade paints. Such painted cakes don’t have much fondant sculpting (fondant is the thick sugar paste that can be rolled, colored, and used to decorate cakes). Instead, their visual appeal relies on bold, vibrant colors and detail.

2. Designer Shoe Stand Showcase Cake

The Cakes 4 Fun Sugarcraft School, Shop, and Kitchen in Putney, London, contributed this remarkable exercise in what appears to be a designer shoe stand (complete with handbag), but is in fact a cake covered in rolled fondant and marzipan.

3. The Simpsons’ Duff Beer Tribute Cake

Homer Simpson's favorite drink, and the most popular brand of beer in mythical Springfield, Duff Beer gets the cake treatment in London at Cake International.

4. Animal Themed Cakes

Amazing animal cakes were in abundance at Cake International in London. At the top we see a tiger, followed by a hippo and her baby, an elephant, penguins, and a dog cake that was probably inspired by real life.

5. Thailand Cake

This beautiful and elaborate work of tasty art came from Thailand.

6. Sugarcraft Still Life

A remarkable 3-D still life created by a master of sugarcraft is displayed at Cake International.

7. Fondant Fantasy Figures

Some of the sugary goodies at Cake International could easily be confused with dolls and toys.

8. Marzipan Tea, Anyone?

It looks like tea time in a foreign country, but take our word for it, you could eat the whole place setting. At Cake International, everything is edible.

9. Classic — and Unconventional — Tiered Cakes

At Cake International 2014 in London, the imagination of bakers and cake decorators runs wild, taking the concept of the classic tiered cake to new artistic heights.

10. A (Literally) Sweet Floral Display

Even the most delicate flowers can be rendered in edible cake, marzipan, and fondant by the masters of art who convene at Cake International.

11. Sailing a Sugared Sea

The artistry that went into this edible South Korean ship is so extraordinary that it would be a shame to actually slice off a piece and eat it. Another masterpiece from Cake International 2014 in London.
