Cabo San Lucas Vacationers Trapped by Hurricane Return to US

By    |   Friday, 19 September 2014 12:36 PM EDT

Cabo San Lucas was still recovering from Hurricane Odile as several American tourists, including a bachelorette party of eight women, made it home to the U.S. after losing contact with their loved ones for days.

The storm's 125 mph winds and heavy rain made landfall on Sunday night, destroying infrastructure, and trapping vacationers in their hotels. Much of the region lost power, water, and phone service — severing all communication back home.

Kate Pope, 27, had traveled to the Mexican resort town on Thursday from Fresno along with seven sisters and friends. She lost contact with her fiancée, William Wilcox, when the storm hit Cabo San Lucas, KTLA reported.

She re-established contact a few days later, on Wednesday morning. She reported that the she and the other women had spent 14 hours in the hotel basement weathering the storm, and later slept in rain-soaked beds. Hotel employees told the guests to keep quiet and keep their flashlights off so as not to attract looters roaming the streets.

"The hotel gates are chained shut and there are guards with batons for security," Pope told KTLA. "Resorts are a good target once the grocery stores are depleted."

By Wednesday, the women began catching flights back to the U.S., getting to San Diego on Wednesday.

According to The Associated Press, federal police announced Thursday that they had stepped up security to restore order, and the transportation ministry said 18,000 people had been flown out of the area on more than 120 military and commercial flights.
