Busy Philipps has opened up about having an abortion in her teens. The 39-year-old actress felt the need to speak up about her personal experience amid debates over the controversial abortion law signed in by Georgia, which could prevent women from undergoing the procedure after about six weeks.
Addressing viewers of her late-night talk show "Busy Tonight" on Tuesday, Philipps said that while the topic of abortion evoked a strong reaction from people, women and their doctors were "in the best position to make informed decisions about what is best for them... Nobody else, nobody," according to Entertainment Tonight.
"The statistic is that one in four women will have an abortion before age 45," she continued. "That statistic sometimes surprises people, and maybe you're sitting there thinking, 'I don't know a woman who would have an abortion... Well, you know me."
Philipps then revealed how she got pregnant at 15 and had an abortion.
"I’m telling you this because I’m genuinely really scared for women and girls all over this country," she said, according to USA Today.
She added that the bill would not prevent women from making "this incredibly personal choice" but could set them up for judgement and ridicule. "Every woman deserves compassion and care, not judgment and interference when it comes to their own bodies."
Taking to social media after her show, the “Freaks and Geeks” star shared the video clip to Twitter, noting that she could not "sit idly by while women’s rights are stripped away."
The post drew mixed reactions.
"And I can’t sit idly by while a child, who’s heart beats inside of you, is murdered because you can’t accept consequences for your actions," one follower replied in the comments section of the post. "Oh my goodness...bragging about killing a baby," another Twitter used said.
Others applauded her bravery for sharing such a personal story.
"Using your platform and sharing something so personal to stand for women’s rights - Queen," another follower said.
