A Burger King in Finland opened a new spa on the ground floor of its restaurant, a nod to the country's tradition of sauna-going.
Mashable reported that the 15-person sauna includes waiter service and is accompanied by a smaller 10-person spa, which comes with a 48-inch flat screen television. Each room at the Helsinki restaurant is decorated with the red and blue colors of the brand, and is also adorned with the slogan "Home of the Whopper" on its walls.
"A 15-person sauna area is perfect for a group of friends for social gatherings or work, venue for the birthday party, or even the organization of the show studio," stated the Burger King Finland website, Mashable noted.
According to Business Insider, Finnish celebrity designer Teuvo Loman created the sauna, which comes complete with Burger King-themed towels, a stove, and video gaming capabilities.
Visitors are welcome to rent out the entire sauna for $283 for three hours.
"And the best, (or worst), bit is you can order in,"
wrote Metro (UK). "You just place your order when you arrive and soon you could be enjoying a Double Whopper while you cleanse your pores. Like we say, it's hard to know whether this is an inspired idea, or a really terrible one."
The New York Post wrote that if a sauna stood a chance of taking off anywhere in the fast food world, it would be in Finland, where there is approximately one sauna for every three people in the country.
"Finns visit spas to relax and get a wellness boost, often with friends or even business partners," wrote the Post. "Uncomfortable steaming naked, especially after downing a burger and fries? You may want to steer clear — Finnish saunas are typically clothing-free, which isn't as taboo there as it is in the States."
"Cultural context aside, opening a spa could seem odd for a fast-food company, but Burger King just might be onto something," the Post added.
The sauna idea appeared to spark varied comments on social media.
