Bun B's Rice University Class Has Misogynist Rapper Teaching Religion

Bun B, a rapper whose lyrics boast about dealing drugs, pimping women, and shooting people, will teach a Rice University religion class this March.

Texas' Rice University has hosted Bernard "Bun B" Freeman as a lecturer since 2011, the Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday.

He began teaching "Religious Studies 331: Religion and Hip-Hop Culture," alongside Professor Anthony B. Pinn after being invited to speak at a class.

Now, the pair is taking their course to the masses, offering free admission to anyone with an Internet connection. The six-week class, RELI157x, will be hosted on the online course platform edX.org, and is now open for enrollment.

Hard hitting questions like "What is religion? What is Hip-Hop? Are they the same thing?" will be explored in the context of "the religious sensibilities of rap artists," the course description promises.

Course content itself will include "a unique mix of videos, readings, music, images, stories, and behind-the scenes insider perspectives."

That means university students might have the chance to explicate Bun B's lyrical oeuvre, including hits like "Big Pimpin'" or "Sippin on Some Syrup," which advocates inebriation via cough syrup.
