The first "Bumblebee" trailer may be light on the "Transformers" action we have grown accustomed to, but it makes up for the lack of effects and explosions with a massive dose of emotion and a rather decent plotline.
The emotionally charged teaser trailer was unveiled Tuesday by Paramount Pictures on YouTube and within hours had cultivated over 968,843 views and thousands of divisive comments.
Most fans seem to agree that this upcoming film, which is set to hit theatres this Christmas, is much more focused on its storyline and having heart.
In an interview with Collider, Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura described "Bumblebee" as an "emotionally complex story" which resonates with the 1999 American animated science fiction film "The Iron Giant," which he said was very contained but did not feel small.
He noted that the objective of the movie is to "develop more time with less robots in a way, and to go back to 1985 and go back to sort of the original heritage" of the Transformers.
This all features in the trailer, which shows a developing bond between Bumblebee and an 18-year-old mechanic Charlie, played by Hailee Steinfeld.
Commenting on their relationship, Bonaventura told Collider that it has a "very distinct idea in it, and then whatever is gonna happen with the chemistry is what’s gonna happen, but it really is a young female lead opposite Bumblebee, and I think Optimus is gonna be jealous that Bumblebee has his own movie."
The quirky yellow robot was living on Earth way before the events that take place in the "Transformers" film series, as was revealed in "Transformers: The Last Knight."
The upcoming "Bumblebee" movie, which was directed by Travis Knight and written by Christina Hodson, serves as a prequel to the franchise, The Wrap noted.
