A motorist flagged down an ambulance taking an 85-year-old man to a hospital to say a dog was sitting outside the speeding vehicle on a step. It was the man's dog, Buddy.

Four-year-old Buddy didn't wait for an invitation when Texas rancher J.R. Nicholson had to be taken to Hill Country Memorial Hospital, The Associated Press reported, and had hitched a ride on the outside of the ambulance.

After the emergency vehicle was stopped, Buddy was put into the ambulance with his owner, The San Angelo Standard-Times reported.

Ranch hand Brian Wright had summoned the ambulance when Nicholson felt dizzy.

Wright drove separately to the hospital and when he got there medical staff told him about Buddy's trip. Wright retrieved the dog from the ambulance, then later drove his boss and Buddy home.

Nicholson said he thinks of lot of his dog.
