"Empire" star Bryshere Gray was arrested on domestic violence charges on Monday after he reportedly assaulted and choked his wife, according to police.
A citizen alerted authorities on Sunday after coming across an injured women at a Circle K who said that her husband had assaulted her for several hours at their Goodyear home, The Arizona Republic reported.
The victim confirmed to police that her husband was Gray, who she said had choked her until she lost consciousness. She received treatment at a nearby hospital and was later released.
Police went to the couple's home in an effort to establish contact with Gray, but he refused to come out of the house to speak to them, the Goodyear Police Department said. Goodyear SWAT and Crisis Negotiations were called out to assist and Gray was apprehended and booked into the Maricopa County Jail just after 7 a.m. on Monday.
"Empire" is a series launched in 2015 that follows a hip-hop mogul who is forced to choose a successor among his three sons who are battling for control over his multi-million dollar company.
Actor Jussie Smollett, who also appears in the show, has been locked in a lengthy court battle that stems from an incident in January 2019, in which he claimed he was the victim of a hate crime that police said he arranged and staged for publicity.
Smollett was charged with making a false report but prosecutors dropped the case. He then counter-sued, stating that his $10,000 payment after the close of the criminal case should prevent Chicago from seeking reimbursement for the initial investigation.
