Wheelan made several appearances on the show’s "Weekend Update" segment, but otherwise didn't appear often in sketches.

CNN pointed out others who have been cut from "SNL" in the past — including Michaela Watkins, Casey Wilson, Chris Parnell, Jenny Slate — who have gone on to successful careers in shows including "Trophy Wife," "Happy Endings," "Glee,” and "Obvious Child."

The show, which will begin its 40th season in the fall, was nominated for 14 Emmys for the upcoming awards show.

Wheelan is a 27-year-old stand-up comic from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was among six cast members added for the 39th season.

Additional "SNL" cast decisions are expected next month, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Other first-year cast members are Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, John Milhiser, Noel Wells, Mike O'Brien, and Sasheer Zamata.

Comedy filmmaker Judd Apatow tweeted words of encouragement to Wheelan.
