A retired corrections officer reportedly killed a man inside a Brooklyn subway station Tuesday, shooting him during an altercation.
Gilbert Drogheo, 32, was pronounced dead at Brooklyn Hospital Center, The New York Times reported.
A 69-year-old retired corrections officer identified as Wiliam Groomes was taken to Long Island College Hospital, where he was
treated and released, The New York Times reported. Another person who was with Drogheo was taken to a police station for questioning.
The shooting occurred at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday on the mezzanine level of the Borough Hall subway station.
According to a preliminary investigation, Groomes and two younger people had an argument on a train, and one of the younger people spit on Groomes, the Times reported. The men separated but encountered one another again in the station leading to a physical confrontation during which Drogheo was shot.
Details of the incident were unclear, with the New York Times reporting that the third person involved in the incident was a 29-year-old man, while other news outlets said the person was a woman.
CBS New York reported that a video taken by a witness shows a gunman is walking through the station and shoving a man wearing a black shirt and camouflage pants. The gun went off as the men wrestled, according to the station.
"I'm shocked, this is my local subway station,"
Elizabeth Brett Schneider told NBC New York. "I'm here every morning, every evening, and this scares me. That's really frightening."
