Brittany Lincicome will tee off with the guys of the PGA Tour on Thursday at the Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky, with one eye on making history, according to ESPN.
While Lincicome is not the first woman to play in a PGA event, she will be trying to become the first woman to make the cut at a men's tour event since Babe Didrikson Zaharias did it in 1945, according to ESPN.
"It's been a dream come true to be honest," said Lincicome, 32, an eight-time LPGA winner and one of longest hitters on the women's tour, according to ESPN. "I was so worried in the beginning when I was talking to my agent about accepting the opportunity.
"I was worried about people on social media thinking I was doing it for the wrong reasons or sending me their two cents. I thought I was going to have to block a lot of people. I have not had to block one person. Everybody has been great, encouraging and wishing me luck," she added.
According to the PGA Tour, Lincicome will become the sixth woman to play in a tour event. Michelle Wie, who is currently on the LPGA tour, did it eight times, the last 10 years ago, according to the PGA.
Along with Zaharias, Annika Sorenstam, Suzy Whaley, and Shirley Spork played at least one PGA event. Lincicome knows she will have an uphill battle. While her driving distance of 269.5 yards in 2018 puts her in the top 10 on the LPGA, it's nearly 30 yards short of the average PGA driving distance of 295.2 yards, according to ESPN.
Lincicome, who will be playing with Sam Ryder and Conrad Shindler, told the PGA Tour that she hopes she can encourage others girls with her effort in the tournament.
"Playing in this event is just great for stuff like that," she told the PGA Tour. "If I can inspire one child to pick up the game of golf and want to play, I feel like my job as a pro has been succeeded.
"To influence any child is pretty cool to be in the position we are, so any time I see kids I always try to give them a ball or a glove or make sure I sign their autograph. That might be that one autograph that will bring them back next time, and that's a pretty cool feeling," Lincicome added.
