Britney Spears' ex-husband Jason Alexander was arrested for drunk driving while being in possession of drugs, it has emerged. The 39-year-old was booked on Jan. 26 for driving under the influence, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, and possession or casual exchange of a controlled substance, Page Six confirmed on Tuesday.
He was held on a $2,500 bond and released later that day, according to the outlet. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 30.
Alexander and Britney, who are childhood friends, tied the knot at a Las Vegas chapel in 2004. Their marriage was annulled 55 hours later.
Alexander later revealed that it was Britney's idea to exchange wedding vows.
"She just came out and asked me," he told ABC News in 2012. "She was like, 'Well, let's get married.' And I was like, 'Sure. You know, let's do this.'"
Alexander added that they had been drinking and "had party favors," although he was vague about what substances they were taking.
"Alcohol is a drug. Coffee is a drug. Cigarette is a drug," he said when asked if they were taking drugs. "Yeah, we were doing drugs."
Last summer Alexander attended a #FreeBritney protest in Los Angeles amid her conservatorship battle. Speaking with TMZ at the time, he said he wanted to bring some "love and attention" to the cause while showing his support to Britney.
Having known her since they were children, Alexander claimed to have a good understanding of how Britney's conservatorship was being handled. He said he could understand why the "Toxic" singer was placed under the conservatorship in 2008 after suffering a breakdown and being forced to enter a psychiatric ward, but it was "ridiculous" that it was still in place. He said Britney was ready for the conservatorship to end.
"I'm Britney's fan and friend forever," he added.
