By    |   Tuesday, 01 July 2014 04:31 PM EDT

A bride and her maid of honor were forced to jump three stories from a burning apartment building in Centennial, Colorado, just five days before her wedding.

Lenise (Ruff) Brown and her best friend, Marilyn Kruc, jumped from a third-story window after being trapped in the fire on June 23. Brown suffered burns to her hands and face and Kruc fractured two vertebrae in her lower back, according to 7NEWS Denver.

Kruc, who had been in the hospital since the fire, made it to the wedding on Saturday with the help of a walker.

"I would consider her my sister,” Brown told the news station. “I just have brothers so she’s the closest thing I have to a sister and I’m just so proud of her for her courage and her strength. For her (to make) that trip, I know it was hard, it means a lot to us."

Brown married Sam Brown.

"It’s been the craziest montage of everything. It’s been really hard and it’s been stressful but we’re here and Marilyn made it and we’re married," Sam Brown said.

Eight people were injured in the fire, one critically, 7NEWS Denver reported.

The cause of the fire, which started in a stairwell, was under investigation, with arson being considered as a possibility.

Brown’s wedding dress was spared from the fire because it was at her mother’s house. But Brown and Kruc lost almost everything in the fire, according to CBS Denver.

“Even though it’s been a hard week I know God’s definitely changed it around and it’s been such a blessing for all of us to gather around and have a celebration and get on with our lives,” Brown told the station.
