'Breaking Bad' Winner of Raffle Arrested on Drug Distribution Charges

The winner of a raffle to watch the "Breaking Bad" finale with the show's cast has been arrested on suspicion he was running a synthetic marijuana distribution business.

Authorities in Lee County, Fla., say Ryan Lee Carroll sold synthetic marijuana — also known as spice — and shipped it via U.S. Postal Service across the country from his Fort Myers home. Officers seized more than 700 pounds of 79,000 individually packaged packets of the drug valued at more than $1 million when Carroll was arrested New Year’s eve, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Carroll and two other men are accused of using a cement mixer to manufacture the drugs.

“Breaking Bad” followed the life of a high school chemistry teacher who turned to a life of crime producing and selling methamphetamine after he was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. The hugely popular series premiered on the cable channel AMC in January of 2008 and the last episode aired in September of 2013.

Carroll, 28, told the Naples News upon winning the raffle that he had been a “Breaking Bad” fan for years. “If you start watching it, you can’t stop,” he said. “It’s highly addicting, just like the meth they make (on the show).”

He told the newspaper he was watching a new episode in September when he learned that actor Aaron Paul, who plays the role of Jesse on the show, was live-tweeting the show. Paul mentioned a contest he was hosting to benefit his wife’s anti-bullying effort called The Kind Campaign. People who donated would be entered into a raffle. The grand prize was a trip to Hollywood with a friend to watch the finale with the “Breaking Bad” cast. Carroll made a donation.

When Carroll learned from Paul during an online video chat that he had won, “I started going crazy. I was speechless,” he told the Naples News.
