Brandon Phillips Heckler Gets Signed Ball Saying 'Shut Up'

By    |   Monday, 23 June 2014 10:10 AM EDT

Brandon Phillips, the Cincinnati Reds' second baseman, had a creative way to deal with a drunk heckler during Wednesday night's game against the Pirates in Pittsburgh: He gave the fan a signed ball with the message to kindly "shut up."

The heckler's brother posted a thread on Reddit about the Phillips' run-in, writing that his brother, John, first started yelling at Reds' first baseman Joey Votto.

"Afterwards, he got started on Brandon Phillips . . . Yelling 'Hey everybody, look how slow Phillips is!' My brother said the stadium was almost empty at this point, so his heckles rang loud and clear," the jeerer's brother wrote on Reddit. "According to him, Phillips even looked over and chuckled at one point. After the game, Brandon Phillips runs over and hands my brother this ball . . . He said Mr. Phillips was completely cool about the whole thing."

Phillips later posted a photo of his signed ball on Instagram with the caption, "#RealTalk: "I don't always sign baseballs for drunk hecklers! But when I do, I thank & kill them with kindness!" #StayHavingFunMyFriends #ImGlovinIt."

John the heckler even managed to snap a selfie with the MLB star, which he later posted on his Twitter page.
