Brandi Chastain, an Olympic and World Cup soccer champion, was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame on Monday, and the internet hasn't stopped talking about the bronze plaque meant to honor her.
"It’s not the most flattering," Chastain said, according to the San Jose Mercury News. "But it’s nice."
Fans were not as generous with their descriptions of the artwork. Ann Killion, the San Francisco Chronicle columnist who wrote the inscription on the plaque, called it a "freaking embarrassment," the newspaper noted.
Killion compared the plaque to a bronze bust of soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, which drew jeers when it was unveiled at the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport in Madeira, Portugal, last year.
Others were reminded of a statue of Lucille Ball that was dubbed "Scary Lucy" before being replaced in 2016 in Celoron, New York, The Washington Post noted.
It was unclear whether the Chastain plaque would be replaced, the Post said, citing conflicting reports.
Twitter users weighed in on the likeness.
