A photo of a boy visiting a sick grandmother in his neighborhood has gone viral on social media after the woman's granddaughter posted the photo and caption on Facebook.

Darrien Middleton, from Jackson, Tennessee, posted the photo on May 8, writing that she "just wanted to shed some light in this dark world we live in."

The boy, named Caleb, 7, visited the woman regularly as she fights lung and breast cancer, but does not want to move out of her house yet, KTVU reported.

"This kid comes and visits my grandmother everyday … 4-5 times a day," Middleton, who did not identify her grandmother, wrote. "He told me it was to check on her, to make sure she wakes up from her naps … My heart can't take this."

Since posting, it exploded on social media. As of Tuesday, it has been shared more than 144,000 times, with 48,000 likes and 2,500 comments.

"Her neighbors help me get her to appointments and checks on her all times throughout the day," Middleton told KTVU. "(Caleb and my grandmother) are best friends. Caleb is a stand out kid who has been handed a difficult situation and he has helped my grandmother through hers."

Many on Twitter took to the heartwarming story.
