A husband and father was killed Tuesday by a large boulder that crashed through a car windshield and landed on his chest along a freeway in Pasadena, California. His pregnant wife is now pleading for information that will lead to the arrest of the person responsible.
The boulder, described as 30 to 35 pounds and a little larger than a volleyball, was dropped onto the 134 Freeway from an overpass Tuesday night, according to California Highway Patrol, CBS Los Angeles reported.
It struck the moving 2017 Toyota Corolla, which was traveling west.
Christopher Lopez, 23, was in the passenger seat. His wife, Guadalupe Gutierrez, 21, was driving. The couple’s 4-year-old daughter and Gutierrez’s mother also were in the car, CBS Los Angeles reported.
Gutierrez reportedly swerved but managed to maintain control. She drove to Adventist Medical Center, but Lopez later died from his injuries. None of the others in the car were hurt.
Investigators hope to get DNA from the boulder to find the killer.
A teary-eyed Gutierrez asked for potential witnesses to come forward with information. "He’s gone," she said, CBS Los Angeles reported. "But I’m asking for your help. If anyone saw anything. Please help us."
The highway patrol said it believes someone purposefully pushed the boulder from the overpass into the westbound lanes of the freeway, The Associated Press reported.
